The “many eyes” effect (and how women get trained to live under it)
It’s January.
You wake up, reach for your phone, and before you’ve even had water the algorithm has delivered:
- a transformation story
- a perfect morning routine
- a woman who looks effortless while “disciplining herself” into a new life
And something in the body tightens.
Not because you’re weak.
Because you’re human.
And because there is a quiet social phenomenon most women are living inside:
Too many eyes.
Too much being watched.
Compared. Rated. Read. Interpreted.
Even if no one is literally watching you — your nervous system behaves as if they are, because the digital world trained it that way.
So January becomes a strange kind of self-surveillance month:
“I should…”
“I need to…”
“I’m behind…”
“I’m not enough…”
Here’s what I want to name clearly:
That feeling isn’t an accident. It’s a manufactured crisis.
Because “not enough” is profitable.
And women are the perfect market for it — because we’ve been taught to measure ourselves through the gaze for generations.
The result is not “motivation.”
It’s nervous system pressure disguised as self-improvement.
So I’m offering a different resolution.
Not “New Year, New Me.”
More like:
New Year, New Nervous System.
Because you don’t need fixing.
You need restoration.
You can unfollow half the internet — and yes, that helps — but the deeper issue is the inner voice that’s already installed:
Do more. Be better. Prove yourself. Perform.
And that voice doesn’t leave when you log out.
It lives in the body.
It shows up as:
- guilt when you rest
- urgency when you slow down
- self-attack disguised as “high standards”
- the feeling that you must earn ease
So what’s the antidote?
Not a bigger plan.
Not more discipline.
Conditions.
A body can’t relax inside constant pressure — even if the pressure is “self-imposed.”
And that’s why I’m making my January message simple:
Choose healing, not fixing.
Try this for 7 days:
- Before you scroll: one long exhale + hand on heart
- Choose one “Eden condition” daily: water, sunlight, a walk, an earlier no
- Notice your inner voice: is it correcting… or caring?
And yes — I’ll say the cheeky thing:
If your New Year plan looks like a military operation…
that’s not a plan. That’s your nervous system asking for a ceasefire.
