The Sanctuary Myth: Fear and Cherishing – chapter 6

The Sanctuary Myth: Fear and Cherishing – chapter 6

Proverb

Fear is a hungry god. Do not build your life on its altar. The Sanctuary did not banish Fear— it simply stopped feeding it.

Chapter 6: The Sanctuary Hearth

They called it the Sanctuary Hearth because it was the first fire in a long time that didn’t demand anything.

It wasn’t grand.

Just a wide circle of stone, a low flame that burned steady, and benches worn smooth by ordinary bodies learning to sit without bracing.

When the figure entered, the room didn’t go silent.

It softened.

Not with naïve trust—Sanctuary wasn’t stupid.

With a kind of practiced welcome.

There were others there: some bright with joy, some tired from carrying history, some who looked like they’d once worshipped at the Altar of Fear and still smelled faintly of smoke.

Pixie spoke quietly.

“Sit where your body says yes.”

Asha poured warm tea as if it were the most sacred and magical act in the world—which, in this place, it was.

Oliver watched the subtle shifts.

NOPE lay near the doorway like a boundary you could lean on.

A woman with silver in her hair spoke first.

“Sanctuary isn’t a place you come to be fixed,” she said.

“It’s a place you come to practice.”

Practice what?

“Cherishing,” she said. “The kind that holds when it’s inconvenient.”

Another voice added, “And repair. Because we will still mess up. All of us.”

Laughter moved through the room—not mocking, not cruel.

A soft, human sound.

Not a performance of perfection.

A rehearsal of truth.

Pixie stood—not dramatically.

“Every month,” she said, “we return to the rhythm.

Same container. Same steadiness. A place to come back to.”

Oliver’s voice was dry.

“We don’t worship Fear here.”

Asha nodded.

“And we don’t pretend Fear doesn’t exist.”

Pixie smiled—more teeth than sweetness.

“We just stop feeding it.”

NOPE’s tail thumped.

Pixie held up a small wooden token carved with a spiral.

“Three vows,” she said. “Holy in the practical way.”

“I ask, not demand.”

“I honour a no without punishment.”

“I repair my impact.”

The room echoed the words—not like a chant, but like people rehearsing a language they meant to speak in real life.

Outside, beyond the gates, the Altar of Fear still stood.

It always would.

It was part of the world’s weather.

But inside the Sanctuary, people were writing a new story.

One where peace wasn’t weakness.

One where love wasn’t imaginary.

One where devotion meant consistent care—not self-erasure.

And slowly—because all true things grow slowly—the Sanctuary became contagious.

Not because it advertised itself.

Because people who had been cherished began cherishing others.

They took the rhythm back to their homes, their friendships, their workplaces, their comment sections, their families.

They learned to bless with their mouths.

They learned to stop feeding cruelty.

They learned to close the gate without guilt.

And when Fear came whispering with its old bargains—

Harden. Win. Punish. Take.

They answered, steady as a held gaze:

No.

NOPE no.

And the fire kept burning.

Not a blazing performance.

A steady flame.

The kind that lasts.

THE END…………………….but is it?

And if you are wondering what you can do now—
where your repair begins, and how to stop feeding Fear in ordinary life—
the story is not over yet.
